About
This home was built circa 1998 by homesteaders preparing for Y2K. The family (husband and wife and their two kids plus the grandfather) built the barn first and lived in it for over one year while they built the cordwood home. At least one of them attended Rob Roy’s Cordwood school up in NY state to learn how to build the home. I have a complete digitized pictorial journal of the building of the house, which can help curious buyers better understand the type of building, the integrity of the structure, and the laying of the wiring and plumbing. I can make this available upon request. The builders only lived in the home for 2 years before moving to Alaska after 9/11 in an effort to get even further off the grid. A family of New Yorkers escaping the chaos of 9/11 bought the home and lived there for another 4 years before moving to a property closer to their restaurant in Brasstown, NC. I have owned this property since 2005 and during that time have replaced the grass roof with a proper architectural shingle roof, installed gutters and downspouts, stained and sealed both barns, re-sealed the roof of the smaller barn, installed the kitchen counters and sink in the small barn to make it an additional self-sufficient apartment, painted the interior of the small barn, and completely overhauled the solar panels and battery system (within the last two years). The contractor who replaced the panels told me they are 13 times more powerful than those I had for 13 previous years, which were already enough to run the main house and the small barn. The larger barn is not yet wired and has only plumbing stubbing. My recommendation for power to this building would be to reconnect the hydropower and run triplex directly to that building with its own battery. Currently, the space is very well lit with the barn doors open and is cozy with candles and lanterns at night.
